My Review of SME server
SME server is designed to a Small office/Home Office solution for a fully functional Internet gateway, Mail server, Fileserver, Web and Application server solution. I Must admit, it has some cool features – But it does have some downfalls as well. I really like to customize my linux distros to suit my own needs (this is what Linux is all about) However, SME does have some annoying proprietary packaging that makes some level of customization difficult. The web interface is very intuitive and has alot of functionality and is very quick. The Ibay feature is really nice for a small office user who is not a Information Technology guru but would like to make some content available on the internet. The mail server runs the rock solid qmail mail server and it comes with Horde webmail installed. The distro is basically a CentOS 4.6 distro with some customer repos in applications installed. The bottom line is that for a small office user who would like a easy solution for a firewall, file server, and web/mail server – SME is a good choice. I plan to rip it apart further this weekend and see what I can break with it! I have already broken it twice and hacked it’s custom built Samba packaging – hehe
