About Me

My name is Dustin Larmeir and I have been working in the technology field for several years and love what I do. My main focus with this site is to blog about random stuff that pertains to my life and write howtos that simplify things for people trying to learn technology. On the Internet and amongst techie people you generally run into arrogance and resistance when seeking help. You will not find that here. To understand why I love helping and teaching people about technology you would have to understand my roots.
Prior to working in technology I worked for 7 years doing Security, Loss Prevention and even a short stint as a Bouncer. During the beginning of this time I was not a computer power user and ran into the same issues that most people do when trying to learn technology. As time went by I began to have an strong interest in computers and became driven to learn more about them. A few things happened during this time period of my life that tipped the balance and sent me on to my career. The first thing happened in about 2002, when I was working in a high rise building doing security for a confidential client. This client was currently in the middle of decommissioning several old systems and throwing them away. Most of these system were gutted and in bad shape however I started collecting them and taking them home. Before I knew it I had about 15 broken computers sitting in my home office. I just started taking them apart, figuring out which part went to which part and before it I knew it I now had several working computers. I found this so fun I kept looking for more and more parts until eventually the Client notice and a member of management there gave me a newer pc I could work with and take home. This opened the floodgates and allowed me to run the then much more powerful Windows XP OS and this took me to next level. I then saved money and went to Fry’s and bought my first whitebox barebones Friday special. I put it together and installed Linux on it. This really got me moving into the right direction, however I was still working security and my time with computers was still somewhat limited. I was growing pretty tired of the security scene and felt like I had made it as far as I would go as a manager for a high profile unnamed security provider and thought to myself ” Why am I doing this, when I could be doing something so much more satisfying?” I decided then that I should go and apply for a tech job ( for less pay ) to get my foot in the door of the tech world. The Place I went was called Calyx Software. Calyx Software was a vendor of one of the most popular loan origination software applications in the market and gave me a uniquie opportunity to work in tech support dealing with real world issues. I truly attribute this company for taking me to the next level in my career however I wasn’t interested in dealing with workstations, I was fascinated with servers which brought me to my next employer, The Planet. I worked at the Planet for about 1 year and during this time learned about Linux, web servers and other Internet related technologies and realized that this area of the industry was my calling. From there I went to SoftLayer technologies which is one of the most advanced, cutting edge companies in the technology industry. After 3 years of working for them I walked away with enough experience to last a lifetime with the many platforms and offerings they had there.
I now work for a very awesome company that is focused on managing and securing servers which is totally different than what I have done before previously. I am keeping the name of my current employer confidential but I can tell you that these guys rock and are the best at what they do. I guess I just rambled on and on in that posting but there is a point to it all. The first point is that anyone can make a career change if they commit to doing so, the second is that not all people are techie types, but they deserve no less respect than others. The third is that my faith in God has placed me down this path and I am blessed to have lived the life I have lived and my faith is one that encourages me to help others. God Bless and enjoy the site. – Dustin
